maybe he is just asking out of courtesy....e.g. it might be considered
impolite if he just took-off without giving them a chance.

Really good bike racers, ones that have the entire "package", are able
to manipulate interpersonal relations with other competitors to their
own advantage.

It's one of the fascinating things about the sport.

And last I saw, Ras is in second place because he "helped" Lance.

They helped because it was in their interest to help.
