Buses vs bicycles - Seven news special report

Seven News are doing a special tonight in Sydney - Buses versus Bicycles.

http://seven.com.au/news/newstips_sydney_bikesvsbuses

The question they're asking is "Should bicycles be banned from transit
lanes" and the answer they're giving in the promos is yes.

My view is, while bikes do hold up buses to some extent - that extent is
tiny and it's an order of magnitude less than parking in transit lanes
outside peak times holds up buses - ever tried catching a bus in an
inner city suburb (say, King St Newtown or Oxford St Paddington etc)
with cars parked in those lanes? The bloody things take forever.

Anyway - get those comments out there - there's a feedback form on that
page.

I got forced to watch 7 news last night for the first time in ages... It really is just a typical poor current affairs show masquerading as news... (I mean, most TV news shows are, but this is really obvious/blatant)...

Comment sent along these lines:
The only traffic that is slowed by me in the transit lane (Hoddle St)
are the cars driving in there illegally. The buses are usually doing
about the same pace as me.

Anybody care to ask why I watch no broadcast TV whatsoever these days?
:p (Tim already knows the answer.)

My view is that busses are okay, they don't slow me down too much. Except
when I'm climbing up hill, can't take the left most real lane, and they stop
me all the time losing me momentum.

Other than that, busses don't slow me down when I'm using the transit lane.

yours,
Sam.

You found a reliable bit torrent site? ;)

You bought a big bad satellite for your yard and cannot drag yourself
away from Neighbors broadcast live from Siberia?

Oh, "no" broadcast tv.. um.. you traded it in on a new bike?

You are a rockstar in your other life and threw it out a window?

You needed a CRT for some strange alien communication experiment?

hah! Vic Parade?

perhaps your rellie can tell ya all about Ch7's official 'unofficial bought story' policy. Eg, latest one is the late news/TT one about teenage girl with longterm wrist injuries from SMSing too much (no.really). Next week miraculously a product is being launched from (big phoneCo here) who's product amazingly will alleviate such problems!!!

someone on here can probably tell all about a radio network's pre-paid stories too.

Remember the toxic shock syndrome story about a girl whom died after using a synthetic tampon? same deal. Planted story. I actally worked on that campaign (the shame). Strangley by the time it all was shown to be irrelevant, Cottons Tampons had become near-market-leader.

So wouldnt surprise me if bus co/union is in the middle of enterprise bargaining and is haggling over service/promptness levelsand looking for an easy scapegoat

It's a Sydney news item, but what's the bet it gets topped and tailed locally and run as Perth/Melbourne/Adelaide/Brisbane buses v cyclists?

oh, i did like the ooprtunistic paid story by the DNA-testing lab doing the paid story on TT (guilty as charged. it was on when i walked into the room...) jumping on the paranoia generated by that 2-faced rightwing highpocright (Abbott) having found out the boom-operator was in fact NOT his sprog.

The latest mobiles have a feature where you can talk to people, in real
time! No more having to tap away on those horrible keypads that give you
repetitive strain injuries. Isn't it wonderful where modern technology
is headed!

I didn't get to see that report on telly (i was driving a Sydney bus at the
time)so when i seen the comments on here, i thought I'd put my 2cents worth
in.
Ok I'm one of those Drivers from STA who drives mainly through the Newtown
are which was mentioned in another post here and quite frankly, I don't have
a problem with Cyclists using the Bus/Transit lane.
Most of the time we have to keep stopping in the busier places like newtown
due to many people waiting at Bustops so by the time we get going again, any
cyclist in the lane has long gone.
I will admit that I allow more for cyclists due to being a cycling
enthusiast myself, so perhaps i could be somewhat biased in my feelings on
this subject.

Only a few things bug me, is dickheads in cars illegally parking in
Bustops( No.1 pet hate) and overall congestion on our roads. There are a lot
of cars in peak hour that shouldn't be there.
Other Buses often slow me down, especially in Peak times and I get stuck
behind a slow bussie that takes his time selling tickets.

As for cyclists in bus lanes, I think it's the safest place they can travel
really besides the footpath and we all know that's illegal eh haha, most of
the cyclists i see are doing a commute to the city, uni or work and most of
them get along pretty quick but occassionally you get the dawdlers who
insist on riding at 10kms/hr and don't take any notice of what's happening
around them. This is the only time they can become a nuisance, especially at
a set of lights when they come up beside the bus and hop in front of you and
then casually dawdle off after the lights have changed green.

You are kidding, right? Riding on footpaths is incredibly unsafe for
everyone concerned...nobody looks for something doing 30-40kph on the
footpath.

I can't speak for everyone, but, yes, I'm not from this planet. You've
found me out. Go on, call Muldy and Skuller, I'll tell them everything..

That reminds me.. must find that cool Planetary Assault System track..
