Well, I am going to ditch the low carb diet...actually, I
already have. I just feel awful on it. I'm already making
good progress by cutting out the junk and eating more
balanced meals.

As for the running...I'm not really a beginner mentally. I'm
running 11-12 minute pace with walking in between... I have
asthma and it takes a really long time for my lungs to get
acclimated again after a layoff from running. My 'average'
pace when I am in good condition is only 10-11. I can hold
that pace for 6-8 miles when I am in good shape. It just
takes time.....I might do better if I used my albuteral
inhaler before a run...and I do if I have an actual
attack...but hate the way that drug makes me feel. I'm also
on provencil inhaler daily to help clear an upper respitory
infection.

It takes me between 35 & 45 minutes to run/walk my 3 miles
right now.

Ok I'll bite, what is wrong with fruit juices? I dislike
plane water and I find Ocean Spray fruit juices a delightful
healthy alternative during the day. I agree with avoiding
junk food to include high test soda products.

Hi Doug,

I can't speak for the other gentleman, but my take on fruit
juices is this. If you did not produce it, don't drink it.
The nutritional value gained from drinking fruit juice does
not outweigh the overwhelming amount of sugar in them.
Natural or added. This may be fine for you because you are
not dieting (?) but for me, the trade off is not worth
it.;-) jo

So, lessee...that gives me a choice of sweat, urine, breast
milk, blood, or saliva. Yum!

You've stripped it of all the dietary fiber and just left
the sugar behind. Commercial juice extraction is not unlike
other forms of processing, and is bad for the same reasons
that refined carbs are considered junk -- all the fiber (the
filling part of the food) is stripped away, just leaving
calories. So I'd put it up there with white bread,
"Gatorbarf", etc.

Most of those calories are either fructose or sucrose (macronutrient-
wise, you might as well take the fructose/sucrose mixture in
a can of coke) It's a great way to cram in calories without
getting full.

I'm not sure what aspect of fruit juice you consider
"healthy".

Cheers,

Hi Jo, I'm assuming you're female (some others in this
thread have assumed you are male and don't need to lose any
weight). I'm female, 5'11" and I was about 155 lbs. While I
did not look "fat" at that weight I certainly did not feel
like I was in good shape. Now I weigh about 140 and am happy
with my weight.

I lost the weight over a few months without even intending
to just by cycling every day (as transportation) and
changing jobs which cut unhealthy lunch choices like Taco
Bell and BK out of my reach :) I've started running a few
months ago having never run before, and I'm hoping to do a
5k in April.

You don't say why you have the deadline on the weight loss,
but I would think it would be better not to rush it. With
the regular running you'll certain be taking off pounds.
Muscle burns fat even at rest so redeveloping those muscles
that may no longer be so toned will definitely help. Runners
generally need more carbs than sedentary people, as the
carbs are an important source of energy. (you could burn fat
instead for energy but I don't think this would be very
sustainable) But South Beach is good carbs not a low carb
diet. So eating a balanced diet, the running, and making
junk food only the rarest treat should work out well for the
weight you want to lose - south beach or not.

What's wrong with any of these? bj

I guess we all should have clued in that "jojo" is not, generally, a
male name :)

As for Ocean Spray... it's basically just pop without the
bubbles. If you do drink Ocean Spray, look for the "100%
Pure Juice" ones and avoid the "Cocktail" ones. The
"Cocktail" ones have a ton of added sugar. Myself, I drink
a big glass of Tropicana Pure Grapefruit juice (nothing
added) in the morning with a very high fiber cereal (10
grams per cup) plus a little protein (yogurt for
instance... plus the skim milk or soy milk in the cereal)
and drink water for the rest of the day... tho' I might
have vegetable juice with lunch (tomato or V8). Probably
lots of added sodium there :p

I true naturalist which is fine but I do have the time or
patience for this. :)n

If you looking for restricting calories I guess this is
place but there are lots of vitamins etc. so I might limit
the quantity but not entirely. As we all know there are lots
of ways to limit caloric intake.

Good luck!

I guess each to their own. Not to get into a diet war but
you sound like an Atkinite with all refined carbs are junk.
If you want to measure every calorie that goes into you body
be my guest but remember everything is relative and all
things in moderation.

I happen to like white bread thank you. As for the term
refined, yes, whole wheat, multi grain are better but let's
not paint white bread in the same category as a Snickers bar
like Atkins paranoia. White bread does have some minimal
vitamins just like other refined products like rice. Are
there better, yes, but they are not as terrible as you or
Atkins propose.

I drink fruit juices for fluids and they are many times
better than soda even with the evil sucrose. I don't
like water my choices are dehydration or fruit juice.
I'm not having a weight problem and so the sugar is a
non problem for me.

If one is having a weight problem eliminate simple sugars by
passing on the junk food. If that does not do the job you
can then aim for for some refined foods.

> Most of those calories are either fructose or sucrose

So all sucrose is evil? I didn't know that. You styartying
to sound like an Atkins devotee.

> I'm not sure what aspect of fruit juice you consider
> "healthy".

Because I need fluids to live and a little sucrose is not a
problem for many of us, since it keeps me hydrated I find
that healthy.

So what fluids do you drink during the day?
