Was this on the flat? I have been at work today but I took
the Fondriest and a brand new Magnum lock which was a
b***** to carry as it nearly weighed as much as the bike,
but now it means I can safely leave it attached to the site
fence, despite the fact that I was threatened with removal
by security the other day. Obviously one bike in a car park
of 600 cars is an obstruction! I only managed 24 mph on the
flat in still wind.

When collecting some tickets for the festival last year, my
friend locked his bike to a set of railings with a "No
bikes" notice. An attendant for the ticket office told him
to remove it, or the police would be called. Knowing that
he'd only be a few minutes my friend wandered in, collected
his tickets and was just unlocking his bike when the copper
turned up. "Alright mate" said the PC, "nice bike". The two
of them then proceeded to discuss road bikes for 5 minutes,
much to the annoyment of the attendant who was watching the
whole thing.

The policeman admitted that he had no tools with him to
remove it, and that it would probably be a while before
anyone had turned up and managed to cut through the lock.
"Just try not to do it too often" was the advice!

Not on the fixed. This was a 2003 Giant OCR 1T. The fastest
I can manage on the fixed (at least around the city) is
30mph, although I think the day I took it to Peebles and
back, I managed considerably more. Downhill all the way home
with a tailwind! My legs ached a little the following day.

I was signed up for a 300km Audax today. Unfortunately I've
had a bad stomach all week and didn't fancy 300km without
the luxury of a toilet!

I did get out for a 100km ride in the New Forest to Keyhaven
via Exbury and Calshot, though, and met quite a few of the
Audaxers I would've been riding with. I'd still be riding
now if I were on the Audax -- with another 3 hours to go!

I took a trip to the post office (with a parcel for an ebay
buyer - squash shoes that I'd won in a competition but
hadn't used) and it was so nice I decided to head for Soho.

Bought a personal stereo on Tottenham Court Road.

Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens and Brompton Cemetery on
the way home.

I ordered one from Wiggle - I was expecting some form of
device for it to be carried on the bike, but there wasn't
one. How are you carrying it?

Just 10.5 miles, but it was glorious. I tried a new route
down the valley, through the village of Gwaelod y Garth down
to Taff's Well, then back on my usual route along the Taff
Trail. The road to Gwaelod was mostly deserted, marvellously
undulating, and the descent down to Taff's Well was
freewheeled at 25mph+. I then pedalled up the hill along the
Taff Trail from Taff's Well, and when I got to the steep,
zig-zaggy bit up to the road that I normally push up, I
stayed on and powered up the whole thing. Progress.

space). My bike was still there after I popped into a garage
today for 5 mins to buy a an extremely well stuffed egg and
sausage sandwich. Petrol stations *seem* like safe places. I
wonder if they are really?

These days (age 48) I'm pleased with myself when I better
20mph on the flat in neutral wind conditions, but once when
young and fit I overtook and E Type Jaguar which most
definitely didn't want to be overtaken...

Mind you, that was coming down the Kirkstone Pass into
Ambleside, so I had both one heck of a gradient and wicked
twisty bends in my favour.

But it was such fun, fun, fun that I remember it to this
day.

I leave the Magnum lock permanently at work ( I was
only taking it there yesterday) - today I went to WH
Smith on the way back from work and they let me bring
the bike inside since I asked nicely. If I'm going
shopping, I use the hybrid - I would never let the road
bike out of my sight

They are a hot spot for car thefts as drivers leave their
keys in the ignition when going to pay for the fuel.
Thieves on the lookout for these would be unlikely to
nick a bike.

I have a device that I got with one of my U locks which will
allow it to be attached to a bike frame for portage
purposes. You or anyone else is welcome to it if you think
it will work.

Thanks for the offer M... I'm starting to think of doing
what Simon does and use it as the permanent security for
home, buying a smaller one for the bike - the Magnum is
really heavy!

Thats pretty much what I do. On day rides I usually don't
bother taking any kind of lock. I rarely leave the bike
unattended, when I do its either in a very quiet village
or at a out of town garage which are usually quiet also.
I rarely go into cafes or pubs when I'm cycling. I use
the U-locks at home and on tour I carry one with me and a
wire extender.

Do people carry locks on Audax rides ?

I don't. The stops aren't very long and they're nearly
always in out-of-the-way, cycle-friendly places (garden
centres, cafes, schools) with safe cycle parking. There's
always riders coming and going so I think anyone suspicious
would be spotted pretty quickly as I doubt they'd be dressed
like most Audaxers. Though on the last one, I did see an
unlocked Colnago outside a pub in Weymouth, which was
surprising -- until I saw its owner looking hawkishly
through the pub window just behind it.

20 miles with son on tandem with wife on her solo yesterday
morning. Today 30 miles early morning blast whilst the rest
of the family were in their scratchers. Then this afternoon
cycled up to the local Scout campsite for St George's Day
parade. Son carried the flag.
