I've found that's good enough to replace OE.

Only thing is, it doesn't apply to OE or Thunderbird for me,
because I'm with Arthur in hating preview panes. The first
thing I do upon installing a new mail/newsreader is to
disable the preview pane, and if I can't do that then the
chances are I'll uninstall it within a couple of days.

Probably because it wouldn't work - Outhouse Excuse trims
trailing spaces automatically [1], which is one of the many
reasons why many people consider it not to be a Proper
Newsreader (TM)
