Minor to major left when traffic jam?

Hi,

I have a tricky junction on my way home from work every day and I was wondering if anyone knew the correct procedure for the situation.

I cycle from a minor road and turn left onto a major road, but often the major road has slow moving traffic backed up down the road so what I usually do is wait until a car on the major road lets me out. The problem is that sometimes I wait there for ages and no-one lets me out and I start to wonder if I'm doing something wrong! I've seen other cyclists at this junction just barge their way straight out without waiting to be let out. Am I allowed to do that too? it seems kinda dangerous and rude!

There are no pavements at this junction either so I can't bypass the junction that way.

any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Bobby
