Saffy is a great person and LCer, MDS. Again, you're getting caught in the

Note well what this is translated from - Any bashing of LC gets
reactions that boil down to demanding actual facts. But the
bashers tend not to have them. Consider PCRM, they lie
regularly in addition to using deceptive wording that is on the
    border between truth and fiction.

In some ways not others. It gets *accused* of being like religion
a lot, but that doesn't mean it actually is. There are people who
claim that science is the new religion, but that doesn't make
them actually right. There are people who treat diet like religion
but that doesn't mean there's no objective reality underneath it
    all.

Among religions there's widespread disagreement, same with
diet types. Among religions there's even a few who start with
noticing they are right for some and then take the illogical leap
that they must be right for everyone, same type diet types.
There are even two religions that take a further illogic leap
that since they are right for everyone then all other faiths are
    false, same with diet types.

Unlike religions there are objective studies about diet and
hypothesis can be experimentally determined. Just like
religion when you actually try the experiments you end up
proving that pretty much anything you care to try works for
    some.

Like religion there are folks who ignore the data, and like
religion there are folks who take data that isn't sceintifically
valid and draw conclusions from it. Unlike religion their is
actual data to be gathered and pondered.

    Atkins-only newsgroup).

Palmer wasn't a troll. We exchanged a number of e-mails yesterday evening,
and he didn't strike me as one. Like me, he assumed that ketosis was the
problem. As far as his wife was concerned, she had decided to do a low-fat
diet while trying to keep her carbs in the same vicinity as his, but by
skipping breakfast and lunch (which he didn't know about until after she
started feeling the pain), she ended up eating what he fixed for dinner each
night, and that was meat, green beans or some green vegetable, and salad.
After dinner they ate frozen Cool Whip for dessert. What he thought about
this was that without meaning to, his wife was taking in 20 or so grams of
carbs a day and went into ketosis, which resulted in her sizeable weight
loss. There may have been fiber in what she was eating for dinner, but
there may not have been enough of it. Furthermore, he has always teased her
about having had gastric bypass surgery in the past because she never ate
more than about half of whatever she put on her plate. So whatever fiber
there was, I'm guessing she ate even less because he said she never finished
off her salads and they always split one can of veggies between them. So
constipation could clearly have resulted, based on the things you've been
telling me. It was as simple as that. From what I understand, he's been
getting up earlier to make sure he fixes breakfast for her and then packs
her lunch. She had told him that it was so busy where she works that she
didn't feel like she had the time to just stop working and eat. So she just
drank diet sodas while she worked and then would get off work early. It was
as simple as that. None of what he said struck me as things a troll was
saying. Since he believes in LC and had a misunderstanding about ketosis,
as I did, he certainly doesn't sound like a troll.

    the carb issue, IMO.

I disagree respectively. I've been doing LC for about six weeks or so now,
and every question I've had about it I've asked over there and got answers
over there. The answers have proven satisfactory to me. When I've needed a
recipe for a low-carb dinner, I googled it and got immediate results. I've
really had no need for this group, but I still lurked in case something
interesting popped up. But as soon as it did, it seemed like a bunch of
elitist people here shot first and asked questions later. What need have I
of that? I also don't buy into the whole religious thing. I'm a true
believer in homeopathic flu medicine, but I've long since stopped touting it
to other people. The two people who did try it didn't take it as often as
they were supposed to, and so it didn't work for them. As far as I'm
concerned, if someone doesn't want to believe that it works, then I'm
content to let them suffer longer with the symptoms. I have family and
friends who've seen me recover from the flu in two days after I started
taking this medicine, and they still refused to even consider it. What do I
care? There will always be people willing to walk through a room filled
with deadly snakes rather than follow someone down a dark corridor when
they've seen that person exit the building safely before. The same is true
with LC. I know it works. You know it works. The people here know it
works. If someone comes in and says it doesn't work, why should anyone give
a [censored]? Let those who don't want to believe in it suffer.

I'm sorry you had to see my bad side, but when others are willing to show me
theirs, I am more than willing to show them mine. When I first started on
usenet, I got involved in a newsgroup devoted to one of my favorite tv
shows. Within one week I got involved in a flamewar with three people who
were so bent out of shape over my opinion on one aspect of the show that
they attacked me relentlessly. The flamewar lasted two months, which shows
you how religiously devoted to something people can be. Well it eventually
ended, and now the four of us are cool. So I understand where you are
coming from. But there's a big difference between a tv show newsgroup and a
health-oriented newsgroup. After what I've seen here, I just don't feel
these people can offer me anything I can't find somewhere else. Why even
bother to come here and pick their brains when they're going to ask like
this the moment someone comes in they suspect isn't sincere?

    Okay here's my situation.

    ::snip::

I just googled the problem, and found this website:

    http://www.emmadavies.net/content/blog/ferncottage/the-porker-update.aspx#symptomsketosis

    Severe Ketosis

If you experience the following symptoms, you need to ease back on the
coconut oil or eat a few carbs!
    Severe stomach pain
    Diarrhoea
    Nausea
Throat tightening or palpitations (caused by adrenaline surges as your
body struggles to raise blood sugar)

After reading this, I had my wife get on the scale, and she said she'd
lost eight pounds in about a week's time. I was taking off a pound a
day when I experienced the stomach pains. This has to be it. Thanks
    for the replies.

Depending on how overweight you and your spouse are a pound a day might
not be too outre at the outset. From your description of both you and
your wife's stomach pain I'd be more inclined to look for a common food
you both ingested. A very common culprit (which, BTW, will cause the
entire list of symptoms listed above attributed to Severe Ketosis) is
one of the sugar alcohols. Avoiding them altogether is the safest way
    to go.

    Carmen

I can't imagine sugar alcohols causing pains bad enough to send a
person to the hospital. *I've* OD'd on SAs before, and yes, it caused
"stomach" pains, but these were relieved eventually by (shall we say)
extended meditation on the porcelain throne. Hardly the stuff of
    hospital visits.

Palmer -- what do you think about the interesting concepts shared in

Good Lord. I read the book once or twice, and honestly I couldn't

was in chapter 15. And yeah, again, I read the book.

Okay here's my situation. About three years ago I went on Atkins, and
after 7-10 days I developed this horrific pain in my stomach that was so
bad I had to go to the hospital. They ran tests but couldn't find
anything wrong. I quit the diet and the pain went away. About six
months later I tried Atkins again, and once again the pain came back.
This time I knew it had to be the diet. I went to my doctor and asked
him for pain medicine and quit the diet. The pain went away. This past
February my wife and I went on Atkins together. This time I did not
experience pain, but she did. It was horrible, and she had to go to the
hospital. They ran a whole bunch of tests but found nothing. She quit
the diet, and the pain went away. Recently I was diagnosed with
diabetes and decided to follow a low-carb but not necessarily
Atkins-type diet. I didn't do any two-week indroduction period and
started the diet tkaing in 75-100g of carbs per day. I have been
steadily losing about three pounds per week. My wife also started
dieting. Her carb intake was greatly diminished and was comparable to
mine, give or take about 20g of carbs. Yesterday she started
experiencing those stomach pains, and she wanted to go back to the
hospital. I think it's a waste of time and money because I know it's
the diet. Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this, and can
anyone explain why someone on a low-carb diet might experience this
    pain?

:: have family and friends who've seen me recover from the flu in two
:: days after I started taking this medicine, and they still refused to
:: even consider it. What do I care?

That's an interesting way to express yourself. You sound very uncaring to
me. Yes, they may be believe in something as you, but why don't you yet have
compassion for them? They are your family and friends, and hence you should
*care* even if you don't hold their positions.

    There will always be people
:: willing to walk through a room filled with deadly snakes rather than
:: follow someone down a dark corridor when they've seen that person
:: exit the building safely before. The same is true with LC. I know
:: it works. You know it works. The people here know it works. If
:: someone comes in and says it doesn't work, why should anyone give a
:: [censored]? Let those who don't want to believe in it suffer.

Because those of us who have improved our health via low carb wish to ensure
that others who are seeking answers will find them, as we did. It is an act
of compassion to care when you have no vested interest. Allowing the spread
of misinformation could prevent others from find what they seek. If others
didn't have compassion, you would not have received the guidence you did on
the diabetes group. And don't forget that a newsgroup is a dynamic thing,
what happens one day don't hold a strong bearing on what will happen two
weeks later. People come, people go. Trying to judge a newsgroup is folly,
    IMO.

    ::
:: I'm sorry you had to see my bad side, but when others are willing to
:: show me theirs, I am more than willing to show them mine.

To what end? You have been very rude to people here that have not been rude
to you, but merely expressed an opinion that was different than yours.

    When I
:: first started on usenet, I got involved in a newsgroup devoted to
:: one of my favorite tv shows. Within one week I got involved in a
:: flamewar with three people who were so bent out of shape over my

:: relentlessly. The flamewar lasted two months, which shows you how
:: religiously devoted to something people can be.

Hence my initial comment about diet and religion. The devotes are similar
    and people react similarly.

    Well it eventually
:: ended, and now the four of us are cool. So I understand where you
:: are coming from. But there's a big difference between a tv show
    :: newsgroup and a health-oriented newsgroup.

    Not really....

    After what I've seen
:: here, I just don't feel these people can offer me anything I can't
:: find somewhere else. Why even bother to come here and pick their
:: brains when they're going to ask like this the moment someone comes
:: in they suspect isn't sincere?

That's your choice, but based on your comments, you seem to be more of a
taker than a giver. However, then it comes to cussing people out, in very
rude and vulgar language, you seem to give large.

Perhaps you should think about that...

    :: Palmer wasn't a troll. We exchanged a number of e-mails yesterday

:: It was as simple as that. From what I understand, he's been getting

Well, they mess me up but don't shoot my BG levels up, much.

All sugar alcohols are not created equal gentlemen. Sorbitol , in
sugar-free Pep-o-Mint LifeSavers is no problem at all for me, nary a
negative side effect despite the laxative effect warning. Maltitol
sweetened products I have to limit, because they will cause a laxative

amount, because they contain little invisible people with knives in
'em, and those gremlins stab and slash my stomach mercilessly (yes MDS,
for someone who was somewhat "delicate" it might make them go to the

They're a variation of Cream Cheese Fudge that one of the other old
timers came up with way back when. This is my rough recipe:
4 oz of reduced fat cream cheese
three heaping spoons of cocoa powder (unsweetened)
9 packets of Equal (Splenda doesn't taste very sweet to me and tastes
downright nasty with chocolate, you may like it just fine)

Mix it up in a mixer - you'll kill yourself trying to do this by hand,
it's too stiff a mixture. This will yield a rather bittersweet truffle
mix. Roll into small balls and refrigerate. Go easy on them, they're
treats and calories do count. ;-)

    Carmen

  20. Yeah, What's a truffle?
