Okay here's my situation. About three years ago I went on Atkins, and
after 7-10 days I developed this horrific pain in my stomach that was so
bad I had to go to the hospital. They ran tests but couldn't find
anything wrong. I quit the diet and the pain went away. About six
months later I tried Atkins again, and once again the pain came back.
This time I knew it had to be the diet. I went to my doctor and asked
him for pain medicine and quit the diet. The pain went away. This past
February my wife and I went on Atkins together. This time I did not
experience pain, but she did. It was horrible, and she had to go to the
hospital. They ran a whole bunch of tests but found nothing. She quit
the diet, and the pain went away. Recently I was diagnosed with
diabetes and decided to follow a low-carb but not necessarily
Atkins-type diet. I didn't do any two-week indroduction period and
started the diet tkaing in 75-100g of carbs per day. I have been
steadily losing about three pounds per week. My wife also started
dieting. Her carb intake was greatly diminished and was comparable to
mine, give or take about 20g of carbs. Yesterday she started
experiencing those stomach pains, and she wanted to go back to the
hospital. I think it's a waste of time and money because I know it's
the diet. Has anyone else ever experienced anything like this, and can
anyone explain why someone on a low-carb diet might experience this
pain?

Gallstones irritated by the increase in fat perhaps? Other than that, no
idea. Been doing Atkins since 2001 and had no problems.Tara

1. Gall bladder- if this is the problem, decrease the fat intake
2. sugar alcohol-sugar alcohols can cause horrible digestive pain.Palmer said:

I just googled the problem, and found this website:
http://www.emmadavies.net/content/blog/ferncottage/the-porker-update.aspx#symptomsketosis
Severe Ketosis
If you experience the following symptoms, you need to ease back on the
coconut oil or eat a few carbs!
Severe stomach pain
Diarrhoea
Nausea
Throat tightening or palpitations (caused by adrenaline surges as your
body struggles to raise blood sugar)After reading this, I had my wife get on the scale, and she said she'd
lost eight pounds in about a week's time. I was taking off a pound a
day when I experienced the stomach pains. This has to be it. Thanks
for the replies. -

not be too outre at the outset. From your description of both you and
your wife's stomach pain I'd be more inclined to look for a common food
you both ingested. A very common culprit (which, BTW, will cause the
entire list of symptoms listed above attributed to Severe Ketosis) is
one of the sugar alcohols. Avoiding them altogether is the safest way
to go.Carmen

In several years I never heard anything like this.
1. Did you read the book?
2. Could there be food poisoning from a food you only eat when dieting? ?
?There have been individuals who would stuff themselves to the point of
nausea. However, they were doing what they imagined the diet was rather
than the true diet."Palmer" <[email hidden]> wrote in message news:[email hidden]...

I honestly don't think it was the sugar alcohols. The reason being is
that up until this dieting excursion I had never had any contact with
sugar alcohols when on Atkins. For me and for my wife the first time
she tried it, it was always straight protein and maybe some cool whip.
Now I am eating the sugar alcohols with no ill effect, but she isn't. -
Straight protein? No green leafies? Maybe it was constipation.

No, never. The only time I ever have stomach distress is when I overeat
carbs.--

low-carb pizzas, even half an ear of corn...it's all good! -

I'm doing something wrong? A simple scan of google has revealed that a
minority of those in the induction phase of Atkins suffered from severe
abdominal pain, and yet this information was lost on some of you as well
as on my wife's doctor. Since ceasing the diet (but still eating
sugar-free candy with sugar alcohols in it), her pain has begun to
subside. But what do I know? I found information on the net which led
me to form a hypothesis (that because some people suffer severe
abdominal pain as a result of severe ketosis, then if my wife's pain is
the result of ketosis she should have lost a considerable amount of
weight over the last week), and then I tested the hypothesis by getting
her on the scale, which showed my hypothesis to be true. As for her
doctor, I guess his medical degree gives him the right to be wrong with
authority, since he told her the pain wasn't because of ketosis. Funny
how each time she and I went into ketosis, we both had severe abdominal
pain, and the pain always went away after we got out of ketosis. -

etc. The first times around, if you were only eating meat and cheese,
no wonder you got stomach pains. Do the low-carb junk foods you eat now
have any fiber in them? Sugar-free candy (well, cough drops the one
time I tried them, but with the same sugar alcohols) give me severe
stomach pains every time, even if I just eat one. -

Well, from the things you mentioned eating, you don't have a clue about
Atkins or low carb in general. Corn is something to be eaten very late in
the plan, if at all. Green leafies are necessary from day one. Have your
wife try again and take a dose of (sugar free) Metamucil every day without
fail. Even if you are eating your veggies properly this is a great assist
to proper functioning of the digestive tract. In news:[email hidden],

What exactly are you eating when you supposedly do Atkins? Give us an
example of what you would eat in a day.TC
