slightly OT. Drivning down the M1

Maybe no one's checked your speedo. Generally trucks (>7.5ton) are limited
to 56mph.

I find this to be the case.

I suspect I've spent more of the past year on motorways than you, generally
in free flowing but busy traffic.

Maybe in law, but I can assure you that there appears to be no physical
limiter on some trucks. There are a few long-ish hills on the M5 near
me, and some trucks can easily do 70mph going down. There is nothing
wrong with my speedo.

Not sure on what basis you can make that statement.

Well, given that I've driven just over 10000 motorway miles in the past
year, it's not a big leap to assume that I've driven more than someone who
appears to be more scared of the trucks in the left hand lanes rather than
the Saabs, Audis and BMWs 6 inches off your bumper in the right hand lane*.

*the ones who are generally leaving the leftmost two lanes free for you to
drive along in at the same speed as them, occasionally having to go right to
overtake the odd truck.

You seem to be following up someone else's thread here, either that or
you're an asshole. 10000 motorway miles isn't exactly a vast amount -
until I moved to be nearer work I was doing a darn sight more than that.
I've gone back through the posts in this thread, and I can see no
reference to anyone being scared of anything.

Now ******** and get a life.

On the flat? Incredibly rare - the ones which do stand out like a sore
whatsit, because all the others are driving on the fairly accurately
calibrated limiter, so go the same speed. (incredibly rare, as in I see
maybe one per 20,000 miles).

Car speedos almost inevitably overread.

"You're lucky that the lorries
weren't generally a problem - when you have a 44T artic chopping and
changing lanes at 65-70mph without any warning it gets even more fun!
"

Implies you're more worried about those than the cars.

Like others on this thread have noted, I don't think lorries are the
problem - they're easy to deal with.

I think that was probably unnecessarily rude.

I know. Just more than average.

No, but you implied that you found trucks to drive worryingly fast, not
something I've noted.

No problem. I'll carry on posting here, if you don't mind. I seem to be
tolerated by most posters here, even if I do have a dangerously low
signal-noise ratio. The ones who don't use early 1990s insults, anyway.

I thought they had a random variation in their limiter at the 0.1mph
level so they could spend ages passing each other at 0.1mph relative
velocity ;-)

A speedo can be out by 10 percent before it is classed as defective

Perhaps people ought to check what the law says before spouting off
about it.

The speed limit for a goods vehicle exceeding 7.5 tonnes on a motorway
is 60 mph http://www.highwaycode.gov.uk/09.htm#103

This much repeated 56mph is the speed that many but certainly not all
companies limit their drivers or vehicles to in order to save fuel. It
also happens to be 90 kmph a common speed limit step on the continent.

then of course it is worth pointing out that the limit for cars is 70
but that the police tend not to prosecute as long as they stay below
80.

Wrong-ish. A speedo tolerance is, IIRC, -0% to +10%, i.e., it is
considered defective if it under-reads at all - it can show 30mph if
you're doing 28mph, but is defective if showing 28mph when you're
actually doing 30mph.

I apologise for my comment - it was uncalled for. I thought insults
were undated, anyway.

FWIW, I'd rather have a SAAB/BMW/Merc 6" from my bumper at 70mph than a
44T artic, or to be side-swiped by one of the above rather than a 44T
artic. The one you will bounce off and have a good chance off
surviving, the other will go over the top of you.

I did say that this was downhill where I've seen artics doing 70. I've
never seen one doing that on the flat, although I'm sure they're capable
of it. Low 60s on the flat is a little more common, but still unusual.

Also the speed that the limiter is set to on European LGVs weighing over
12tons first used since 2001.

Most trucks on the road are European and relatively modern, so in some ways
it is a de facto limit.
