Depends on how you've buggered it.
If you've wired the power backwards the magic smoke might have
escaped. Even then there's a chance that you could track down
the smoking components and replace them providing you've got
good eyes and steady hands.
Perhaps you've tripped some kind of chassis intrusion mechanism
(that happened to me a month ago - bloody infuriating).

The other alternative is that the power socket wasn't the real prob.
Try running it without the battery installed for example...
