Does insurance covers damage to borrowed bike on car rack driven into wall ?

I let a friend borrow my bike this weekend for a race and he drove it
into a pedestrian overpass of some sort and the bike and bike rack
were ripped off the car. Although the bike is still rideable I am
obviously ****** about the damaged parts and concerned that the bikes
structural integrity has been compromised.

Does anyone have experience or knowledge of the chances of getting the
bike's replacement cost covered by the driver's auto insurance? This
is a slight twist on most of these "bike-into-garage" claims since it
is the policy holder damaging someone elses bike and not his own.
Thanks.

Chances are the auto insurance won't cover it, since it is not a part of the
car. But, there is a possibility that his homeowners policy may have
coverage for personal liability. Once I broke my neighbor's window with my
lawnmower. When I checked with my insurance agent, he used the opportunity
to sell me coverage for things like that.

If your friend is any kind of a "mensch," he will make sure you are made
whole, even if it has to come from his own pocket. And, he should be the
one chasing down this question.
