Ladies / Chaps - Whats the feedback on Jan's gut and weight for pre-season ? See following links for analysis... I think a little beefy standing next to Rogers and Kloden but on the whole not to bad....

This is too funny for words. Before going to bed last night, my son who races competetively called me into his room screaming. He shows me this pic from cyclingnews.

I explode in laughter. Without even seeing his gut you can tell from the cheeks that he is stuffed beyond belief.
All this press **** from T-Mobile from the past month about the clause in his contract, his weight being ideal etc is a bunch of baloney.
I mean all Tour riders gain 10-15 pounds Lance included after the Tour or when they stop their season. But the diff is that Ullrich has the most problems losing it.

The guy looks like he is a monster. He is sooo huge.
Something we can all agree on.
He is freekin FAT and HUGE!!!!!!
Check out his butt! Each cheek is in a different time zone!

LOL, to much beer and bratworst in the offseason. He will never learn. Anyone still picking him to win a race this season?

The reason I feel Jan is a fat oaf is becasue I have been awed, I reapeat awed as I sit on the trainer and watch him in the 97 Tour, I understand what Ullrich fans are about. But also every time I see the tapes I am awed at how THIN he was. I think he had knee problems later and overcompensates by weight training to correct the muscle imbalance which led to the knee prob, but he is just SO much bigger.
Here are 97 TdF pics. I assert he has NEVER been this thin in the Tour since, and therein lies a big problem for him.

Look at the first, the elastic in the arms does not even close around his arms!

Have to agree... he is wearing a few layers for winter training but he is still looking chunky well no he is looking fat.... I'm mean he looks like some of my mates who drink, eat, smoke and never exercise at all so Big Jan must be putting away a fair bit of food..... Rogers and Kloden look good thou.... maybe they can win the Tour instead ? Get him on the Atkins diet or something... there are blokes who earn $30,000 a year in the peleton who keep themselves in better condition.....

Where is Giuseppe Guerini in the pics?
I'd send out a manhunt.

Jan looks like he freekin ATE Guerini for lunch!!
Watch out Klodi, you are lookin mighty tasty.

It's sad that LA, a RETIRED cyclist who has gained some weight, looked less fat in the December 05 Discovery Channel Texas camp than JU does now. :(

Eldrack -- That JU is in better shape than a poster who, I assume, is not a professional cyclist (?) is not saying much. It's like me saying that JU is in stunning physical shape relative to me... obviously, that means nothing. ;)

The second pic is particularly bad. Is face looks very full, especially under the chin.

Kloden, on the other hand, looks very fit.

On second thoughts maybe he isn't so fat, his legs look like they have no fat on them what so ever:

http://www.cyclingnews.com/news.php?id=photos/2006/news/jan06/t-mobile_pres/IMG_0190

and he isn't that fat, damn better shape than me, thats for sure.

Those pistons that he calls legs look good but that’s to be expected.

The second picture looks like he is holding his gut in... look at the expression on his face ! You can imagine the photographer saying..., "Ok, lads here we go, say cheese, Jan hold your breath now !, SNAP SNAP SNAP..." job done.

The group picture shows how "wide" JU is relative to others on the team.
Well Velonews has all the story about how Ullrich is not fat etc etc.
I think Velonews is full of it.
Part of it is that Jan is just a big guy, period, big bones, call it what you will. He is a big guy.
Which makes his going up hill so fast relative to little guys so amazing.
Just think about what his damn power numbers must be.
No wonder Lance was always the most afraid of Jan.
Lance in an interview after the Tour said there were some discussions about Jan on Disco, and that if Jan were on the team, no question, he would win the Tour.

Ully looks like he wintered badly in cycling terms.

He looked better at the start of 2005 than he does this time round.

That's why I mentioned about the hair on the USPS thread - if you're sweating (thereby training hard) you prefer to have a sort haircut.
Obviously he hasn't been training hard.

He was 22 years old in the links that you listed above.

If you look at the second link - the man in front of Jan is the man who used make JU train really hard at Telekom.
He's a guy called Udo Bolts - a hard man and a great domestique.

All bodies change over time.
This is the great problem for all cyclists trying to keep weight off them.
Indurain used say that he went through hell trying to stay lean.
Merckx too.
Guys over 6ft tall - will always experience problem because their body mass, as opposed to body weight, increases.

JU will win the TDFin the mountains and in the TT's. The little extra weight he has will roll off in the Giro giving him the leannesss he needs. I remember the same thing being said about LA at this time last year. Some of those pics shown has JU in several layers of clothing.
JU has to be motivated. There is no LA in his way , and even thought Basso is a serious threat, he is not LA & Discovery. JU should no longer have any marriage problems.. His new wife is probably a more cycling friendly woman coming from a cycling family. Her brother was JU teamate wasn't he? I think I am right on that. I do not follow the European gossip press to know for sure.
Think about it guys........If JU rides the Giro, and rides it to win, this may be the 1st time in many years that we have a potential for the Giro/TDF/Worlds. To me that is the ultimate season. I am not familiar with the worlds course, but to a champion it really does not matter. If JU won the Giro/TDF and went to the Worlds, do you think the Germans would leave Zabel at home and build a united team around JU ? This could be the season.

I went back and looked at those Links/pics provided and think that his "Beatle cut" hair thing makes his face look fat. And those pics also show him in several layers of clothing.

I looked at the photos again - he does have several layers on.

But his face.
And the hair - if you're sweating a lot, you don't want to have long hair.
I know I don't at least.

Sara Steinhauser is Jan's new girlfriend and is marketing manager for ski company Elan and sister of Jan's former team-mate and good friend Tobias....... quote unquote "Oh mein gott, Jan ist so dreamy !"

http://www.bild.t-online.de/BTO/sport/aktuell/2005/06/27/ullrich__freundin__sara/ullrich__freundin__sara.html

PS Jan was never married to former girlfriend Gaby who he has a young child with named Sarah.

PPS Better still Bild is suggesting that Sara is Jan's performance enhancing drug and just for good measure they say Lance is a big fat cheat pardon the pun.
