  1. Hi all,

I've noticed that at camping stores now they are
selling titanium cookware, sometimes coated with
some kind of enamel, but often not. It looks
interesting because it is very lightweight, but
also because it is not aluminum which is dangerous
    to use for health reasons.

But my question is, is titanium any less toxic
    in actuality?

    Thanks.

It's another in the growing list of 'the sky is falling' scare
    tactics.
They'll also tell you to stop taking aspirin and antacids, since
those cantain far more aluminum than you'll ever get from a pot.
The FDA treats anything that can leach into food from any
containers to be an additive. They don't consider aluminum as
    such.

I know a guy who isn't a professional chef but is a phenominal cook who
knows his stuff - he shells out the $ for the aluminun. Plus we drink
beers and soda out of aluminum. We cook with stainless steel, cast
iron, others. Why would Aluminum be an issue? It's a metallic element.
An oven stove or campfire isn't going to change it's atomic structure
    or anything.

Many (15-20?) years ago, there was a widely publicized news story
linking aluminum to Alzheimer's disease. As a result, many people think
of aluminum as being extremely harmful to human health. It was later
found that the presence of aluminum in samples from Alzheimer's brain
tissues was the result of using powdered gloves (whereas the normal,
control samples were not handled using powdered gloves). Unfortunately,
as is often the case, the retraction/correction was not as widely
    publicized as the initial report.

  7. Aluminum cans are plastic lined on the inside.

Aluminum has been related to Alzheimers disease. Other metals have
been associated to almost every other form of nervous system and
    immune system diseases and syndromes.

Mercury content (thimersol) , approved by the FDA as a preservative,
in your US vaccines has been also related to many deaths and immune
    system disorders.

No, they are not. At least not in Canada. Cut open any beer can or pop
can, and plastic you will not find.

I don't think Al is an issue, but just to be clear on one point. The
insides of soda and beer cans is *painted* with a coating to prevent the
    beverage from touching the Al.

My brother, who works for one of the largest Al can manufacturers in the
world tells me it isn't because Al is dangerous, it's to avoid the Al from
    affecting the taste.

    daestrom
P.S. And a neighbor that is a VP of Novelus has shown me how the 'paint' is
burned off of recycled cans before being put in the melter for recycling.

Titanium is one of the most bio-compatible of all the non-precious metals.
That is why it is widely used in the human body for medical/dental implants.
Unless something wierd happens at high temperatures, I would be 100% comfortable
with titanium cookware (except for the price).

Beryllium is a whole 'nuther matter.

I cut myself on a Beryllium lathe shaving when I was a young man and the
    wound took forever to heal.

  14. Without reading any further, I would like to say this:

My grandfather worked in an aluminum smelting plant for damn near 48
years, he lived and breathed aluminum, and in his spare time his hobby was
melting lead and making fishing lures and sinkers. All this time he smoked 2
packs a day and ate bacon and pork and grilled (WELL DONE) steaks. He stayed
out in the sun all day fishing and camping. He died naturally of age at 80.
He did not have altzhimers (sp) or did he die of cancer. His last words to
me were "Your a good boy, I love you" My grandmother who NEVER smoked and
never worked at the age of 83 has altzhimers and at this point in time has
    no idea who I am.

There is a lot of chicken littles out there and it seems this week that
grilling you food causes cancer. I say live life live every day as if it is
your last, By this I don't mean be reckless with your life. I save money and
enjoy my life with my child all that I can , because who knows that big ole
bus just might not have its brakes as you cross the street!

can, and plastic you will not find.

Look closely, and you will find a thin clear coating of polyurethane. After
you cut it open, scratch the inside with a knife. Ball can manufactures
cans around the world and 'paints' both the inside and exterior of cans for
almost all the major beverage companies. (brother has worked in Ball's
engineering division for quite a few years)

It is done for both for taste preservation, and in the case of some products
like Coca-Cola and Pepsi, to protect the Al from the corrosive nature of the
    beverage.

YES, The Corrosive Nature of the Beverage...or the ability of Al to be
    corroded!

    Take the aluminum taste test:

Take a teaspoon of baking soda and boil it up in 8 oz of water in a
glass pot. Let it cool. That's your control. Do the same in an aluminum
pot or any other metal or lined pot for that matter. Let it cool. Taste
a difference between them. If there is no difference you have nothing
to be concerned about. If there is a difference then something else is
in your water! Mind you, baking soda is NOT acidic. What's happening
when you cook something acidic like tomato sauce, or coffee from an
aluminum pot??? I don't know about you, but I'm not going there!

  20. As the Insurance Company statistics say Your natural life expectancy
is 85% based on how old your father lived, Purely genetics. This is
