Helmets good. Compulsory helmet laws bad.

I like Bell helmets too, just not the BS on the boxes,
nor the BS that you need to buy a new one every 3 years.

The crusade for a helmet law reminds me of zealots who
loudly protest the contents of Hustler Magazine as if
they were forced to read the magazine. Why is this
crusade to prescribe helmets take on such a vicious
and personal tone?

I think the term vicious best suits the arguments I
have seen presented here in "helmet wars" (and this
discussion) which writers wish serious injury, physical
disability, and even death to those who choose not to
wear a helmet assuming there are such bicyclists.

If you are a normal male cyclist, you ride outside the
limits of helemt protection-something like 14 mph, 4
feet, in their testing. I object to the notion (and the
notion the helmet makers want you to have) that wear a
helmet, never get hurt, not wear one, drool cup and
diapers...

Cycling in a safe manner can be done with or without a
helmet and there many factors that are far more important
than wearing a helmet in making ones daily rides safe.

[Mandatory helmet laws] reduce the likelihood of people
riding a bike which, aside from entirely selfish concerns
(I do own a bike shop, after all!), concerns me because I
see obesity and generally being out of shape as far more
dangerous to the average person than not wearing a
helmet.
