When I go running and cycling, I find myself having to clear my nose of aload of snot.. and now that the cold winter air is comming in.. its only getting worse.

Does anyone have any technics or tips on what to do about it..
like controling my breathing or summat..

I asume there must be way to stop it happening has i dont see lance armstrong getting his hanky out every few moments when hes on the tour.

I don't believe there is a way of curing it without seriously heavy
medication or surgery. Meantime, hold thumb under one nostril and blow
snot out the other onto the road. Sorry but that's the only way unless
you carry a trailer full of hankies.

Stop breathing ;-) the only cure!

The air you breathe in is relatively dry and cold.
Your nose may be cooler than your body core.
The air you breathe out is at body heat and saturated with water vapour.
Cold air can hold less water vapour than warm air.
The moisture condenses on cool surfaces, like your nose.

The nose also produces mucus in response to increased air flow.

You probably saw Lance Armstrong riding in warm France in the summer.
England in the winter is different.

Lance may have been mouth breathing; maybe you should try this.

No need for surgery.. decongestant taplets work a treat.. only i dont want to OD on them while im training.. and im not sure if they are still on the banned subtances list.

Is blowing the nose a good thing? or should you just try to ingore it?

Is it healthy to take those continuously?

I can tell you never suffered the problem too badly. It's totally
impossible to just ignore it. Nose blowing is not good for your ears but
it's a case of either blowing or dripping!

Once the little towelling patches on your track mitts are saturated
it's either that or sniff. Don't bother with a hanky though; close one
nostril with a finger and clear the other one straight onto the road.
Repeat on the other side.

That's fine if you are alone. However, if there's someone right behind
you..........

My nostrils are not configured for that. They produce a fine aerosol mist of
snot, which coats my shoulder, where it crystallises. Consequently, I don't
do it, and I get annoyed at those in my cycling group who do, especially
when they get me. I once proposed changing the club's name to the Snot
Dodgers.

Wait till you get to the back of the bunch.

That's OK. It'll encourage them to take more turns at the front.

"The snot has caked against my pants; it has turned into crystal."

Does snot have a crystalline structure? It always seemed unlikely to me.
When I was 15 I had a friend who was obsessed that his semen might
crystallise, causing him some kind of unspecified problems.

It's ok if you don't want him there! Seriously folks, circulate to the
back of the bunch and clear it there.

I'm riding with a cold just now and I'm surprised there haven't been
cars skidding off the road behind me........ hee hee.

While this trick does work I confess to carrying a handkerchief in the
back pocket of my jersey.

Eyes exposed to lots of cold wind tear more.
Tears run from eyes down naso-lachrymal duct into nose.
Nose drips.

Unfortunately glasses don't or barely help me. Nose still runs.

Are these standard glasses or wrap-around cycling shades. I find
my eyes are worse when wearing standard glasses than without (ie
contacts) since air gets pushed over the lens and around the eyes.

Not ordinary glasses. I've tried cycling glasses that seem to stop any
wind hitting the eyes. Perhaps I could get some bigger ones if that could
help.

Too twee. I'm surprised you didn't call it a "hankie"
Graham

get a recumbent. i found that my nose didn't run anywhere near as much
on the recumbent. If I changed over to a conventional bike, my nose
would run within minutes of riding in the winter.
